Lisa Niemi Swayze Pushing for a Pancreatic Cancer Initiative

"Celebrities have long been known to help draw attention to bills and causes, and so are eagerly sought by interest groups, especially at a time of dwindling resources and a trend against earmarking for special groups or causes.

Ms. Swayze – who has met with Democratic Senate leaders and plans to meet with Republican leaders next week – is pushing for bills in both chambers that would establish a Pancreatic Cancer Initiative “to assist in coordinating activities to address the high mortality rate associated with pancreatic cancer,” according to the House bill, which has scores of bipartisan co-sponsors. Ms. Swayze expects to be joined Tuesday on Capitol Hill by 700 other people who are seeking passage of the bill.

“Most cancers are championed by survivors,” Ms. Swayze said, but in the case of those who get pancreatic cancer, “it is up to loved ones and family and friends to carry the flag for them.” ..."

For those who don't know, Lisa Niemi Swayze was the wife of Patrick Swayze (widely known as "the guy from Dirty Dancing.") He passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2009 and was the first case of pancreatic cancer I'd ever heard of.  Lisa is constantly pushing for ways to get the word out and spreading awareness.
